Before the Industrial revolution, people’s life had been very harsh. They had been moving around on foot, wagons, stagecoaches, and many other types which were slow. It was also hard moving around the states and it wasn’t pragmatic. Messages and mails were sent by pony expresses and some travelled by boats. They took days and days to reach their destinations and it was tiring. Everything was harsh until the era of the Industrial revolution took place. Many inventions replaced the past which lead to a greater success and an age of glory. This led to the age of imperialism and colonization. Many creations were invented which replaced the old models of transportation and communication. One such example was the steam engine which was invented by Newcomon’s and it was eventually modified into a steam boat by Robert Fulton. The first bicycle, the telegraph, the street cars, and many other inventions came about during the Industrial Revolution. Another great invention was the Macadam road. The Macadam road was constructed in 1822 and it connected the 2 states in America. (Hagerstown and Boonsboro, Maryland). Before the road was build, the road was bumpy and slippery. During the rainy season it was impossible to travel across the states and a stagecoach could only travel 50 miles a day due to the road. After this was build, it encourages westerners to travel here and this increased the rate of trade between the states. Not only it increased trade, it also was the first prototype of the roads which later led the world to success. Two of the most important creations during the Industrial revolution were the Suez Canal and the telegraph. The Suez Canal was the first canal linked to India which increased colonization in Africa. This canal is 101 miles long and it is connected between the Mediterranean sea and the Red sea. The telegraph was invented by Samuel Morse and he also invented the Morse code named after his name. The Morse code is a set of dots and lines where every letter has its own code. The telegraph made it possible to be able to send messages over sea which made a huge improvement to communication between people. Before the telegraph was invented, communication between countries was complicated and therefore the invention of the telegraph made a huge improvement to society. Transportation and communication had been changing throughout the industrial revolution which not only had affects on society, but also affects on colonization and imperialism. The advance in transport enabled international travel to be achieved in a much shorter time therefore opening more opportunities for international trade and colonization. Before the 1800s many westerner countries trade with political network but after the era of industrialization, many western countries started having powerful weapons and massive steam boats which made them conquer other parts of the world. Many western countries such as Britain started invading Africa and Asia which made a huge change. In the 1800s England controlled 35 percent of the world but in 1914 they controlled over 84 percent of the world. Missionaries were sent to other countries to spread religion and new trade centers were established in foreign countries which eventually developed into colonies. The enabling of colonization eventually led to European countries competing for the greatest number of colonies throughout the world and for the great power and world influence. This was known as Imperialism. There are many examples of this during the Nineteenth Century. In East Asian countries like China and Malaysia. China is a perfect example of imperialism and it all started with a war. At that time western countries were fighting over control of countries. At this time Portugal and Spain were allies and Holland and England were allies. Both of these countries have been fighting over Hongkong and Macau. During that time James Clavell’s wrote a book named “Taipan” which explains the war between the western countries and how people’s life was. Another example of imperialism is India. India was been taken over by England and there was a reason behind that. England saw India as a place where it had a tremendous source of money and resources. During that time England conquered India by using big steam boats which had many attachments on it such as massive cannons. India had surrender which made England bring back many things such as spices, ivory, gold, and many other resources. Throughout the industrial revolution, imperialism has been developing throughout time. After the development of transportation and communication, many countries had better opportunity to conquer other land and another very good example of this is Japan. During that time Japan was a closed country which didn’t allow any trading to happen. But after steam boats were invented, the western nations had an opportunity to threaten Japan with their tremendous steam boats which are modified with heavy cannons. The picture seen is an illustration of a steamboat descending across the Tokyo Bay in the year 1853. General Tokugawa Shogunate knew that there was no way to protect the country so they surrender to the western nation and they couldn’t resist to trade with Europe.
After the developing of imperialism, western countries started developing through the property of industrialization. They realized that the colonies they conquered had many resources that they could sell and make money by them. Steam boats benefited the countries by transporting goods around faster and efficient. Many western countries such as England started conquering China and America and there is a reason behind that. England began getting control of China which made the amount of cotton sale increased. England also conquered the lands in Africa and they knew it was a perfect placed where rubber could be grown. So in the year 1884 Britain started a new colony in Congo. England decided to farm rubber which made them become richer and this benefited the mother country which then leads to the idea of mercantilism. This is where England doesn’t allow the colonies to trade with anyone else but their country and they could regulate the prices of the object.
The Industrial revolution was an era where the prototypes of every creation were created. A very good example is the Macadam road where it was the first idea of all of the roads. This road also encouraged people to come trade among the states and stagecoaches could move around faster. Transportation and communication also played a big role in society since that time till now. Another good example of this is the steam boat which was invented by Newcomon. The boats later led the western countries to success like England. England conquered many parts of Asia and Japan is an excellent example. Before the age of Industrialization, Japan was a closed country where it didn’t allow anyone to trade with them but after steam boats were invented, it made a huge upgrade to the military. They had to surrender which made England a prosperous country. Communication also played a big role in society like the telegraph. The telegraph made messaging become easier. Before this was created people had to depend on pony expresses which took a long time. If the messages were sent oversea, it would take months for it to arrive. But after the telegraph was invented, it would send a set of codes called the Morse codes which took no longer than 5 minutes. Both of these components improved society and developed until now….
